He's Out There (2018)

John is the main antagonist of the 2018 horror film He's Out There. He is the son of the former family that lived in Laura's vacation house. He disappeared into the woods when he was 18 and stayed there, even after his family moved out. When Laura started staying in his house, he began stalking her and her family, waiting for the opportunity to kill them.

Afterwards, they start to hear something on the roof, so Laura arms herself with a knife and goes to the car. In the car she finds a present, which turns out to be another creepy doll. Freaked out, she runs back to the house to grab the girls and get out of there. However, when they try to drive away, the tires on the car fall off. With no car they run back into the house and lock the doors, all while laughter emits from the forest.

The girls hide under a bed upstairs and John comes in and sits on the bed. He talks to them, while soaking a rag in chloroform, then he lifts the bed and uses the rag to knock both of them out. He drags their unconscious bodies outside and uses a knife to mutilate two of his mannequins, intending to replace the mannequins' eyes and arms with Maddie and Kayla's. Just as he's about to cut off one of Kayla's arms, Swan Lake starts playing, which he follows to the trunk of the car and finds a music box. Laura surprises him from behind and manages to wound him with the axe. After a brief struggle, Laura drives the axe into his back, which appears to kill him. However, as they're driving away in the car, Kayla looks back and his body is gone.

If you strip all of the subtext and nuance out of The Babadook, artlessly slam it into a third rate version of The Strangers, and turn the cliche meter up to 11; this is the result. It doesn't help that the photography uses an ultra high contrast filter that removes virtually all of the color and detail from the imagery. It's supposed to be thematic. The story involves a children's storybook that is is about a monster in the darkness and the duality of light and dark, but it's so underdeveloped that there isn't a throughline and we are left with an aggressively ugly looking film. This movie is cliche city. Every part of this pattern built from other better films. One star for the actors. They try, but there is nothing to work with.

the slipknot drummer silences these very annoying siblings (thank you!) while all images are drenched into a chrome bath and get sucked out of all paint and ink. there is a still photograph from the set where the mask of the killer is gaily colourful, really cute and fancy. the end product - already punished by so many mistakes in tone, tempo and tension - looks more like a befuddled object of unsexy digitization.

Shivers, there's a creepy guy Out There. When he's not living in a family's holiday home spying on them over the years. He's writing dark children's books, and creating luring treasure hunts with creepy tea party payoffs. What a guy.

All the ingredients are there and Lasher knows the score, presenting a very familiar premise made unusual by the extent to which he's willing to saddle an obvious hero like Laura with two little girls, one of whom has poisoned herself eating a mystery cupcake in the woods while the other is extraordinarily, and believably, useless. If it all plays out as just a bit more than the sum of its parts, credit flourishes like the mother buying herself time to do something brave by giving her girls a watch and telling them to count to twenty. (Her attempts to keep them from seeing exactly what's happened to dad are good, too.) Once the masked slasher appears, though, it all gets a little too conventional, dispelling, if not all, a goodly portion of the good will it's built up just by being a dick. Regardless, it's beautifully shot and genuinely tense at times--a bit with a cellphone left at a kid's tea party in a place it just should not be could serve as the foundation for a film all its own. If at the end it's just another one of those movies, at least for a few moments He's Out There is something new and exciting.

There's precious little to recommend this brainless, bloody horror movie. Strahovski is appealing, and there are a handful of creepy touches, but He's Out There almost immediately gives up all pretense of caring. Why doesn't the family just wait a few hours to drive such a long distance together? Why is Laura intentionally leaving her phone in her car? Why are the kids essentially following breadcrumbs into the woods and eating the mysterious cupcakes they find there? By the time Laura lets a guy die because it doesn't occur to her to break the window she's ineffectually banging on, viewers will have abandoned all hope.

It's always a good time for a scary movie night in. We're constantly looking to Netflix for the year's newest horror movies, but it's worth mentioning what's already there.
